Those who use Microsoft Excel, know the importance of macros that make repetitive tasks easier in an Excel workbook. Created using Visual Basic for applications (VBA), macros are very helpful while working on Excel, but there is something called macros viruses of which you should be aware of. These look like macros as these viruses are also created by using the macro programming language. These viruses can hamper the functioning of a computer significantly. To avoid the threats of macros viruses, it is important to maintain effective security measures by setting the right macro security level in Microsoft Excel.
Viruses created using macro programming language exploit the real power of VBA macros and cause adverse effects on your system and data files by attacking those as a virus. The foremost defense that can mitigate the possible threats is the usage of macro security along with antivirus software.
Relying on antivirus is not enough as viruses get upgraded very quickly, and there are majority of chances that the antivirus that you have installed on your system won’t be able to recognize such latest threats. So, you need to ramp up your PC security against macros viruses. Security levels in Microsoft Excel macro can strengthen the security against these viruses.
The security levels are like check gates that decide which of the Macros must get the permission to run on your PC. In Microsoft Excel there are four security levels:
- Very High
By choosing the right security level, you can best fight against the Macro viruses. To choose your Macro security level in MS Excel you need to navigate to the following:
Tools>Options>Security tab and finally hit on ‘Macro Security’ button to get the dialogue box where you can choose your Macro security level, but before that it is important for you to know which level to choose.
Read below to learn:
When to Use Low Macro Security?
Select low macro security level only if you are very sure that your active virus scanner is full proof and capable of detecting the Macro viruses. However, Microsoft doesn’t recommend choosing low security level because antivirus often fails to recognize the newly launched viruses. Rest, if you can ensure that you will personally check the safety of the files, then only go for the low security level.
When to Use Medium Macro Security?
The medium level security is kind of manually enabled security. On choosing the medium level, whenever you will open a workbook containing macros, you will be prompted with a dialog box that will ask if you want to enable macros. The dialog box will have the following options:
- “Click Disable Macros to open the workbook but prevent the macros from being run.”
- “Click Enable Macros to open the workbook and allow the macros to run in the workbook.”
- “Click More Info if you need help making your decision.”
- “Close the Security Warning dialog box to prevent the workbook from being opened at all.”
So, here you have to manually select whether to ‘Enable Macros’ or ‘Disable Macros.’ So, you can go choosing medium security level only when you know that you are the only person using your computer and you are sure and confident that you will click “Disable Macros” on receiving an unexpected file.
Microsoft recommends not using ‘Medium’ setting on a regular basis and never to use it, if you share your computer with other users.
